The first Southern Necropolis Research Project was setup in 1989 and the teams objectives included recording the details from the many monuments within the cemetery, building a database, researching of individual lives etc. The project was to be the Gorbals contribution to the then City of Culture Celebrations for 1990.

The driving force behind the Project was that of the late Charlotte Hutt and her dedication and belief in the historical importance of the Southern Necropolis resulted in the first “City Of The Dead” publication in 1996.

The interest for the Southern Necropolis has grown in many ways and following much hard work and dedication from SGHET and its supporters, the challenge of creating a new publication was undertaken. With the assistance of the Mitchell Library and their experienced design department, the new book “City Of The Dead - a guide to Glasgow`s Southern Necropolis” will be available around August/September 2007.

The SGHET team are very proud of this publication and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the creation of this unique “window on time”, to our cities past.
